Lesson 9. Square knot. SK chain.

To learn and train the Square knot mount two WCs of a convenient length on a AC with simple LH knot. (Lessons 1, 2).

Two middle cords will be the AC. This is the basic pattern, though when necessary only one cord or a bundle of cords could be used as the AC.

Pull two middle cords and attach them to the macrame board under tension.

There are two WCs: the left WC which is the WC to the left of the ACs in a certain moment and the right WC, which is the WC to the right of the ACs in a certain moment.

* Take the left WC above the AC cords to the right and under the right WC. A loop is formed to the left of the ACs.

Thread the right WC under the AC and up through the loop formed at the previous step.

** Tighten the first loop of the Square knot pulling both WCs simultaneously.

For the second loop take the left WC again, thread it under the tensed ACs and above the right WC. A loop is formed to the left of the ACs.

Thread the right WC above the ACs and down through the loop, formed to the right of the ACs at the previous step.

*** Tighten the knot, pulling both WCs simultaneously. This is the Square Knot (SK).

To train the SK repeat steps-by-step from * to ***.

  1. You will get SK chain. Note that it is strait, does not twist and have a certain pattern.

2. You can also make a twisted chain. Repeat only first loop of the Square Knot (steps from * to **) . The chain will twist by itself.

To make it even it is recommended to change the places of the WCs periodically in the same direction the chain itself is twisting.
